Devastating Wildfire Threatens Lives and Property

Residents Evacuated as Fire Rages on

BUTTE, Calif. (July 3, 2024) - The Thompson Fire, which broke out on Tuesday morning in Butte County, has grown significantly and remains uncontained. As of Wednesday morning, the fire had consumed nearly 5 square miles and sent up a large plume of smoke that was visible for miles.

Authorities have ordered evacuations for almost 50 square miles on the west shore of Lake Oroville, including the Oregon City and Cherokee communities. The Oregon City Elementary School has been established as an evacuation center for those displaced by the fire.

The blaze has destroyed multiple structures and forced residents to flee their homes. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no injuries have been reported at this time.

Firefighters are battling the blaze from the ground and air, but the rugged terrain and extreme heat are making it difficult to contain the fire. The Thompson Fire is currently zero percent contained, according to CalFire.

Residents are urged to stay informed and follow evacuation orders. Updates on the fire will be provided as they become available.
